it's not rocket science
As the day of the Faerie visit drew ever closer, Jasper's went mad with preparations. An entire wing had been created to house the Fae delegation, complete with original Fae furniture, a miasma of flowering plants including Fritillaria, Allium vineale and Atrofusca Iris and of course many varieties of grape native to the Faerie realm.
Kate's household saw an altogether different kind of transformation.
Sera became unbearable as the big day drifted nearer. She would fuss about Kate's skin, dabbing here and there with concealing makeup and constantly reminding her not to tell anyone at school, not even her friend Gilda, of her identity. "You cannot trust anyone to keep a secret," she said. “Secrets are only secret if they are kept by one.”
Her distress was r...
The day that Pope & Bear Magical Academy excitedly awaited finally arrived. One beautiful, frosty day in December, a little before school broke for Christmas the Faerie delegation made a sunset entrance in full on Fae Fury rock splendor.
The headmaster, Professor Jacob Berzelius Snowmaine, (a scholar admired for his work on advanced magical notation and also the first to discover the properties of dragon snot), was a timid and and slightly fidgety man.
When Kate had first heard his name, she'd pictured a bespectacled, gnomish man with a large red nose, sat upon a kindly face, who was otherwise slender and wizardly in appearance. Nothing could have been further from the truth.
Snowmaine was enormous standing an impressive 6 feet 5 inches or 200 cm with broad shoulders, a...
a piece of faery cake
Hesrial’s abrupt departure surprised Kate; she stood staring at the space where Hesrial should be, thinking (not for the first or last time) how unlikely a Fae she was.
Kate had no idea what Hesrial has run off to do but she trusted that she meant no harm, and with nothing else to do she sat and started watching the colours in her suit as they flowed, slowly fading and then coalescing in swirls of beauty, shifting between light and dark.
The suit’s power was leaving. Soon it would be mostly black with the odd hint of red, but now, it was deep purples and blues with scintillations of gold. It was very calming, almost hypnotic, she bent forward, drifting with the patterns. As her breathing slowed, she entered a light kind of trance and almost immediately the voi...
things get sticky
Kate knew exactly where they were leading her, and she knew exactly what it meant, but that didn't stop her heart from pounding as she rounded the corner from the great hall into the student den.
She spotted Baron Avicenna standing by the enormous fireplace, arms crossed, and with an expression so serious she thought she would turn to stone before it.
She was aware of the flour and bits of fairy cake batter stuck to her dress and face. Her hair and clothes carried leaves and dirt from crawling around in the bushes. She felt her cheeks starting to heat up like a furnace.
"I'm sunk," she thought, “this may really impact my christmas present quota...”
"Kate," the headmaster said, but not unkindly, “we've conducted a divination and it suggests that there is somethi...
to the dungeon with you!
Kate's sense of relief after leaving the Baron and headmaster melted away as soon as she left the room. She didn't want to go near her locker, but it was really very cold especially now her power suit had gone. Wow, how she missed that. She decided she really needed her jacket and a little money to buy food. So with Hesrial in tow she headed for the Great Hall.
When she arrived, she spotted at least 20 kids playing and milling about, but they all stopped and simply stared at her as she walked by. She could take this, but the "spritely thief" painted in bold red letters on her locker was quite a bit harder to ignore. She grabbed some paper from a nearby bin and scrubbed the graffiti out, then threw open her locker, took her things and ran.
Through it all, H...
just let me sleep
On re-entering the relative warmth of the school, Kate found she was now exhausted.
She'd gone 18 hours without sleep, and her lids felt like someone had attached ten pound weights on each of them. Worse, she hadn't had time to shower and she was starting look and smell bad. Her face was covered in fairy cake mix, her clothes, leaves and dirt.
"Urgh" said Hesrial, examining the state her clothes were in, “this is not a good look”.
"Yeah", Kate mumbled. “Hesrial, go get cleaned up. I need to wander a bit and come up with a plan.”
She expected some argument, but her new friend, just wandered away, looking at her clothes with an expression of distaste on her face.
Kate knew that her brain starting to slow down. Coming back from the hut, she had smashed h...
